Managing environmental impact

At COFCO International, we are committed to manage our environmental impact by managing the inputs of our operations in an environmentally responsible manner.

This includes reducing our carbon emissions, using energy and water efficiently and the re-use or recycling of waste where possible.  Our Environmental Policy  underlines this commitment, while our environmental management systems are implemented in accordance with internationally recognized standards, such as ISO 14001. 

We work to grow our business while becoming more energy efficient, including investments in clean technology and carbon emissions reduction initiatives. Based on annual carbon emissions monitoring, we identify emission reduction opportunities and implement energy-efficient projects to reduce our footprint.

In addition, we have a portfolio of ongoing low-carbon energy installations with renewable energy technology projects in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. These investments aim to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and position COFCO International as a significant producer of ethanol, bio-diesel and biomass power, supplying the grid with clean electricity.

Water is among the world’s most precious natural resources – and it is vital to our agricultural and industrial processes. At all our industrial facilities, we have annual water efficiency targets to encourage good practices. 

In Brazil for example, we reduced freshwater withdrawal per tonne of processed sugarcane by 20 percent with a new effluent treatment facility and vinasse concentrator—optimizing effluent disposal quality and creating cost savings.

Through our environmental management systems, we monitor and reduce our waste, wastewater generation and pollutant emissions at each facility. Standardized data is collected at each facility and managed in a centralized database system to monitor our performance. 

For our primary production of sugarcane in Brazil, our procedure for responsible application of pesticides and fertilizer ensures that we minimize the environmental impact on neighbouring land and communities.
